Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that manipulates underlying nasal structures to change the nose’s external appearance. The procedure can increase or reduce the size of the nose, alter the shape of the tip and/or bridge, as well as help correct breathing problems. The ultimate goal of rhinoplasty is to transform the nose in such a way that it looks natural and blends harmoniously with your other facial features.

Patients should wait until their nose is fully developed – 14 or 15 years of age for girls, and possibly older for boys – before undergoing rhinoplasty, although assuming good health, there is no upper age limit to have your nose reshaped. In addition to being used to correct a wide array of aesthetic complaints, Rhinoplasty is also a surgical option for patients with nasal deformities and breathing problems, including those with a deviated septum or who were born with a cleft lip or palate.

Because of the intricate and highly individualized nature of rhinoplasty, it is important to select a plastic surgeon who possesses both surgical proficiency and artistic vision. Because of his extensive craniofacial training and experience, Dr. Sati, MD, has a unique appreciation for the relationship between anatomy, form and beauty. Using computer imaging, he will analyze your facial features and determine how to best alter your nose and improve facial symmetry.

About the procedure

Rhinoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia, in an outpatient setting requiring no more than a 24-hour hospital stay.

The Healing Process

  • Pain following the procedure is generally mild, but there may be a significant amount of swelling, which can last for up to two weeks.
  • A nasal splint (cast) will be placed on the nose and left on for one week; packing is not usually used.
  • Although stuffiness will persist, nose blowing is not permitted for two weeks. Dr. Sati will prescribe a nasal spray that will alleviate stuffiness and dryness.
  •  Light exercise may resume after two weeks, and vigorous exercise is permitted after four to six weeks.
  • While final results are evaluated six months to one year after the surgery, you will likely to begin enjoying the new appearance within a few weeks

Post-operative Instructions

  • No glasses of any sort should be worn for six weeks after the surgery.
  • No diving or contact sports for six months.

Follow up appointments

  • First follow up: Five days after operation
  • Second follow up: Three weeks after operation
  • Subsequent appointments will be scheduled on a case-by-case basis with your surgeon.
